NY-NJ Gateway Tunnel Project Will Likely Get Funding It Needs

The House Appropriations Committee is preparing to reject President Donald Trump's call to cut funding to Amtrak, and Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday said there could be $900 million available to start the Gateway project, which includes replacing a century-old bridge in the Meadowlands and digging a new tunnel into New York City. However, the Trump administration has only committed to considering providing funds.

Frelinghuysen has two declared Democratic challenger (and others are on the fence) in what's shaping up to be a competitive congressional race next year.

The Gateway money would come out of several pots, including grants for rail repairs, allocated funds for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, and direct funding for the Hudson River rail tunnels and the Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River.

A House subcommittee is scheduled to consider the bill Tuesday night.

"Now more than ever, it is critical to our economy and to our quality of life to have safe and well-functioning transportation infrastructure", Frelinghuysen, R-Harding, said in a news release. "Rebuilding the Hudson Tunnels is of vital importance to my home state of New Jersey and our region". According to The New York Times, the estimated total costs of the tunnel were calculated to be $13 billion, a drastic increase from the $7.7 billion that had originally been announced.

Booker warned of a "traffic Armageddon" if there were a need to close the existing rail tunnels connecting NY and New Jersey for weeks, similar to the Penn Station track closures during what Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has dubbed the "summer of hell". National Democrats see an opening to flip the seat and have made the district a top priority in the 2018 midterms.

Christie heaped praise Tuesday on Frelinghuysen.

Trump had proposed cutting Amtrak's funding from almost $1.4 billion this year to $756 million.

Assemblyman John McKeon, a Democrat who is considering a run against Frelinghuysen, said Frelinghuysen "has many more billions to go to make amends" for his support of the American Health Care Act.

"Congress is wise to invest in the Gateway tunnel proposal".

The expected costs of a new Hudson River rail tunnel connecting NY and New Jersey-part of the wider Gateway Project-have risen after an evaluation of the project's environmental and economic impacts. Charles Schumer, Kirstin Gillibrand, Bob Menendez and Cory Booker could "match the commitment of Congressman Frelinghuysen in the United States Senate".
