In a news release Tuesday, The Holy See announced that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Nelson J. Perez as the new Bishop for the Diocese of Cleveland. He comes to Northeast Ohio from Rockville Centre, New York, where he has been serving as auxiliary bishop since 2012. He experienced every joy, sorrow and challenge a parish pastor experiences and our priests understood that he knew them and supported them. "With his warm personality, Bishop Perez will endear himself to all who meet him".

Perezis the chairman of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops' Sub-Committee for Hispanic Affairs.

One special moment with Bishop Perez among many was a bus ride we shared in September 2015 at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.

Perez, 56, was born in Miami and was ordained in Philadelphia in 1989 after attending St. Charles Borromeo Seminary there. In the interim, Bishop Daniel Thomas of the Diocese of Toledo has served as the administrator for the diocese, which consists of Ashland, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit and Wayne counties.
