At the other end of the spectrum, California dominated the list with seven of the 10 worst places for first-time homebuyers, with Santa Barbara taking the unhappy honors at the top of this sorry list.

The report looked at 23 "key indicators" in 300 cities across the U.S. First-time home buyers beware.

Honolulu straddled the best and worst lists with the lowest real-estate tax rate, 0.29 percent and the highest average energy cost per household, $455.51. Murfreesboro was 60th in affordability and had the 10th-best real estate market.

According to Neighborhood Scout, Miami has a property-crime rate of 43.77 per 1,000 residents.

Santa Clarita ranked 237 out 300 USA cities, all considered to be the "Best Places for First-Time Home Buyers", according to WalletHub. Tampa came in as the 31st best city.

The top five overall best cities were, McKinney, Texas, with a score of 68.32, Frisco, Texas, which scored 68.2, Allen, Texas, with 68.15, Cary, N.C. scoring 67.98 and Norman, Oklahoma scoring 67.64.

In a separate chart, WalletHub takes into account city size, labeling Santa Clarita as a "mid-sized city", where it ranked 82 out of 98 cities.
