A civic police volunteer was killed and another policeman was injured in a bomb blast at Kalimpong police station gate on Saturday night. "We suspect that these are the same explosives that were used".

"There was a bomb blast in Darjeeling's motor stand area at 12.10 am".

The incidents have marked the return of violence in the Hills during the indefinite shutdown called by the GJM, in demand of Gorkhaland.

"It was a high-intensity blast... parts of the explosives were found at a distance of 30 to 40 m from the blast spot".

Darjeeling: A civic volunteer died, and two others were injured in a blast in northern West Bengal's Kalimpong police station on Saturday night, police said.

Gurung, Prakash Gurung and Praveen Subba include 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging war against Government of India), 122 (collecting arms to wage war against India) of Indian Penal Code, Section 3 and 4 of Explosive Substance Act and Sections 16, 18, 18A and 18B of UAPA.

Police said that long wires were used, along with highly-explosive detonators, the kind that were generally found in Maoist-affected areas. There was an input that a large number of gelatin sticks were stolen from a hydel power plant in the area recently. Early on Saturday, a GJM office at Lebong was set on fire while a forest office-cum-bungalow was torched at Badamtam.

He also added that since the blast is a national security issue, they kindly request the Home Minister to constitute a High Level Enquiry Committee immediately, to be comprised of National Investigative Agency (NIA), with a Supreme Court judge monitoring the entire investigations, so as to ensure fairness of the investigations.

No individual or organisation has so far taken responsibility of the blast, but the police said top GJM leaders like Gurung, Prakash Gurung and Pavin Subba were prima facie suspects. "The forensic team has visited the spot", Sharma told PTI.

The police had accused the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) of being involved in the early morning blast. "This was a planned move aimed at bringing disrepute to the movement and the demand for Gorkhaland", Bimal Gurung said in a statement.

But the battle lines seem to have been drawn with West Bengal Tourism Minister Gautam Deb demanding immediate arrest of Bimal Gurung.
