There are reports of a shooting in southern France after three armed men allegedly jumped off a train from Paris and opened fire.

Police ordered commuters to rapidly leave the train station at around 21:15 local time, the Midi Libre newspaper reported.

The station is now closed as passengers report being stranded on trains.

The Telegraph later reported that the "armed man" turned out to be carrying a starting pistol, common for races, or a non-lethal weapon.

Another security official said police are working to verify whether the activity had any link to the attacks Friday around Barcelona.

Local police have advised people to steer clear of the area surrounding the train station where gunshots were reportedly heard and which has been evacuated.

French authorities stepped up controls on the border with Spain after the Barcelona attacks.
