Plane crashes in Willow Creek Canyon, one mile from Madras Airport

Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkin said the crash about 2 p.m. Saturday about a mile south of Madras Municipal Airport started a brushfire on a cliff.

A local farmer was on scene and fighting a small fire when emergency responders arrived at the scene, according to Julianne Repman, a spokesperson for the Central Oregon Joint Information Center.

The pilot and passenger both died in the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash and witnesses are being interviewed by officials.

The fire has been extinguished and officials said it is no longer a threat to the area.

The fire is not affecting campers at the airport for for the eclipse and is also not affecting any nearby homes, he said.

The Jefferson county Sheriff's Office confirmed crews are responding.

This year's airshow is August 25 and 26.
